I don’t think I would have said that!
Monday, January 14th, 2008A Story in today’s free press Kinston Council researches non-partisan elections Quotes Lyle Holland a member of the same church I attend and one that I have always considered as a friend, even though he is a Democrat and I will sill consider as a friend.
Quote from free press
Lyle Holland, chairman of the Lenoir County Democratic Party, said Friday that ward politics would only polarize Kinston.
He dismissed LaRoque’s claims that Republican candidates are prevented from running under the current system. He said the City Council has had Republican members in the past, and that Republicans currently serve as Lenoir County Commissioners.
“In my experience in local elections, people vote for a person; they don’t vote for a political party,” he said.
Holland, who stressed that he was speaking for himself and not his party, called the nonpartisan proponents’ efforts “selfish.”
“In my opinion, those people that are pushing for nonpartisan elections are looking out for their own selfish interest,” he said, “and not what would be best for the city as a whole.”

Lyle, when did you get run over by that train?
Lets get the facts straight!
1. ward politics would only polarize Kinston
Don’t know where you’ve been, but this city is about as polarized as it can get! Last time I checked - the city is in excess of 60% black and if Black Leaders used their heads, they could have an all black council. Look up the rules, if the council were to change to non-partisan elections - they have the option to use At Large or Wards for elections. If the Justice Dept takes a look at the minority they will find that whites are the minority.
2. He said the City Council has had Republican members in the past
A quick check will show that no Republican has ever been elected to the city council - Gordon Vermillion was elected as a Democrat and served two terms, when he switched he lost his bid for reelection.
3. people vote for a person; they don’t vote for a political party
If that’s the case, why did Vermillion lose in every black precinct in the city, they liked him as a Democrat but as a Republican his name didn’t show up when the straight D was pushed at the polls.
Debbie Beech, a black Republican, could not win the black precincts but did well in the white precincts.
4. those people that are pushing for nonpartisan elections are looking out for their own selfish interest
It would appear the city council is the ones looking out for their own selfish interest. I think what would be best for the city as a whole is to let the voters decide the issue, not the people who are serving as a result of a straight D pull at the ballot box.
Wake up Lyle - this city needs help and this would be a good way to push Kinston into the 21st Century!
